World Children's Day 2025

A day to celebrate child rights

November 20, 2025

Why World Children’s Day Matters (and How You Can Celebrate!)

Did you know that every year on November 20, the world comes together to celebrate children everywhere? Today is World Children’s Day! While some countries have their own special day, November 20 is the big one, thanks to the United Nations and a history of struggle and commitment.

The History behind WCD

What’s the story behind this day? Back in 1954, the UN decided we needed a day to focus on children’s welfare and rights. November 20 is extra special because it marks the anniversaries of two huge milestones: the Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). Basically, it’s a day to remind everyone that kids aren’t just mini-adults —they’re individuals with their own rights and voices.

This year’s theme is “My day, my rights” and “For every child, every right.” It’s all about making sure kids get to speak up and be heard. Schools and communities around the world celebrate with events, campaigns, and fun activities to raise awareness about children’s rights—like the right to education, protection, and play.

Every right for every child

Let’s talk about some real game-changers for child protection in 2025: CPIMS+ and Primero. These digital platforms have been making waves all over the world, helping child protection workers do their jobs better and faster. This year, CPIMS+ was rolled out in new countries like Mali, where it’s transforming how vulnerable children are identified, supported, and tracked. The system now supports real-time case management, secure data sharing, and better coordination between agencies—meaning kids get help quicker and nothing falls through the cracks. In places like South Sudan, CPIMS+ has helped reunite over 7,000 families since its launch, and there are now more than 35,000 cases managed through the system. Meanwhile, Primero celebrated its 96th live deployment in 2025, with new launches in countries from Bosnia to Mongolia and big upgrades like multilingual support and new protection modules. The Primero community held a global meeting this year, bringing together partners from over 70 countries to share stories, data, and new tech that’s making a real difference for kids everywhere. It’s all about using smart tools to make sure every child’s rights are protected, no matter where they are.

World Children’s Day isn’t just about big organizations or governments, though. It’s about all of us. You can get involved by advocating for children’s rights in your community, supporting organizations that work for kids’ welfare, or simply spending quality time with the young people in your life. Listen to their stories, ask about their dreams, and let them know their voices matter.

The day is also a great reminder that children and young people have the same fundamental human rights as adults, plus a few extra ones tailored to their needs. They’re not just possessions of parents or objects of charity—they’re individuals with their own rights. The Convention on the Rights of the Child outlines everything kids need to reach their full potential, seeing them as individuals, family members, and contributors to their communities.

So, whether you’re joining a campaign, volunteering, or just having a heartfelt conversation with a child, remember: every action counts. Together, we can help build a world where every child is safe, heard, and empowered to thrive.
